THE D.I.G.I.T.A.L. MODEL

VOICE - A Simple Framework for Captivating Audiences

By internalizing the key principles and techniques shared by Shaan Puri and other master storytellers, I developed a simple and easy to follow storytelling framework that encapsulates the key elements and techniques.

The VOICE Storytelling Framework Elements

  1. Value: Identify the core value, message, or emotional impact you want to deliver to your audience. This is the foundational intention that will guide your entire storytelling process.
  2. Obstacle: Introduce a clear obstacle, challenge, or conflict that your protagonist must overcome in pursuit of their intention. This creates tension, stakes, and a reason for your audience to invest in the story.
  3. Intention: Craft a relatable and specific protagonist with a well-defined intention or goal. This intention should be both emotionally resonant and demonstrative of the story’s core value.
  4. Change: Build towards a pivotal “5-second moment of change” where your protagonist undergoes a significant transformation or realization. This is the emotional climax of your story and should deliver a satisfying payoff for your audience.
  5. Emotion: Infuse your story with authentic emotion and vulnerability, using techniques like sensory details, personal anecdotes, and universal themes to create a deep connection with your audience.

Applying the VOICE Framework

To apply this framework in practice, start by identifying the core Value you want to convey, such as the importance of perseverance, the power of empathy, or the beauty of self-acceptance. Then, create an Obstacle that challenges this value, such as a personal failure, a societal injustice, or an internal struggle.

Next, craft an Intention for your protagonist that is both specific and emotionally resonant. This could be a desire to overcome a fear, right a wrong, or achieve a long-held dream. As you build your story, focus on creating a clear arc of Change for your protagonist, culminating in a transformative moment that delivers the emotional impact you intended.

Throughout the process, use techniques like vivid sensory details, personal anecdotes, and universal themes to infuse your story with authentic Emotion and vulnerability. You can also apply principles like humor, novelty, and relatability to make your story more engaging and memorable for your audience.

Some key benefits of this framework include:

  1. Clarity: By focusing on a single core value and intention, you can create a clear and cohesive narrative that avoids confusion or meandering.
  2. Emotional resonance: By crafting a relatable protagonist and building towards a transformative moment of change, you can create a story that connects with your audience on a deep, emotional level.
  3. Flexibility: The VOICE framework can be applied to a wide range of storytelling formats and genres, from personal essays to fictional narratives to business case studies.
  4. Iterative improvement: By breaking the storytelling process down into distinct elements, you can focus on improving specific aspects of your story with each draft and iteration.

Ultimately, the VOICE framework is just one possible approach to structuring and crafting a compelling story. The most important thing is to experiment with different techniques, find what works best for your unique voice and style, and keep practicing and refining your skills over time.

Example of the Framework in Action

Let’s work through an example using the VOICE storytelling framework. We’ll create a story about a young entrepreneur named Sarah who’s trying to launch her first startup.

  1. Value: The core value of this story is the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. We want to show how Sarah’s determination and grit ultimately lead her to success, despite the many obstacles she faces along the way.
  2. Obstacle: Sarah’s main obstacle is a lack of funding and support for her startup idea. She’s poured all her savings into the project, but she’s struggling to attract investors or customers. To make matters worse, her co-founder decides to quit the company, leaving her to manage everything on her own.
  3. Intention: Sarah’s intention is to prove to herself and the world that she has what it takes to build a successful company from scratch. She’s driven by a deep passion for her product and a desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
  4. Change: The pivotal moment of change for Sarah comes when she’s on the brink of giving up. She’s been rejected by dozens of investors, and her bank account is running dry. One night, while working late in her tiny apartment, she receives an email from a satisfied customer who shares how Sarah’s product has changed their life for the better. This email reignites Sarah’s passion and determination, and she decides to give her startup one last push.
  5. Emotion: To infuse the story with authentic emotion, we’ll use techniques like:
    • Describing the physical toll of Sarah’s long hours and sleepless nights
    • Sharing anecdotes about the sacrifices she’s made, like missing her best friend’s wedding to work on her pitch deck
    • Tapping into the universal fear of failure and the joy of hard-earned success

Here’s how the story might look in practice:

Title: The Email That Changed Everything

Sarah had always dreamed of being an entrepreneur, but nothing could have prepared her for the roller coaster ride of launching her first startup. For months, she poured her heart and soul into her product, a mobile app that helped people manage their mental health. She believed in it with every fiber of her being, but the rest of the world seemed indifferent.

Investors laughed her out of pitch meetings, saying her idea was too niche. Her co-founder, her rock and her partner in crime, decided to quit when the stress became too much. Sarah was left alone, burning through her savings and wondering if she’d made a terrible mistake.

One night, after another crushing rejection from an investor, Sarah hit her breaking point. She hadn’t slept in days, and her apartment was littered with empty coffee cups and crumpled-up pitch decks. She was ready to give up, to admit defeat and crawl back to her old job with her tail between her legs.

But then, an email landed in her inbox that changed everything. It was from a customer, a young woman named Lisa who struggled with anxiety. Lisa shared how Sarah’s app had helped her manage her symptoms and feel more in control of her life. She called Sarah her hero and thanked her for creating something that truly made a difference.

Sarah burst into tears as she read Lisa’s words. In that moment, she realized that this was what mattered most - not the money, not the accolades, but the impact she could have on real people’s lives. She decided to give her startup one last shot, pouring every ounce of passion and determination she had into making it work.

And work it did. Slowly but surely, word of mouth began to spread about Sarah’s app. More customers like Lisa shared their stories, and investors started to take notice. A year later, Sarah closed her first round of funding, and her startup took off like a rocket ship.

Looking back, Sarah realized that the hardest part of her journey had been learning to believe in herself, even when no one else did. But she also knew that if she hadn’t received that email from Lisa, she might have given up too soon. It was a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is one person believing in you to change everything.

This story showcases the power of the VOICE framework in action. By focusing on a clear value (resilience), creating a relatable obstacle (lack of funding and support), establishing a specific intention (proving herself), building to a pivotal moment of change (receiving the customer email), and infusing the story with authentic emotion (describing physical and emotional struggles), we’ve created a narrative that is both engaging and emotionally resonant.

Of course, this is just one example of how the VOICE framework could be applied. The beauty of this approach is its flexibility - by focusing on these core elements, you can craft compelling stories across a wide range of subjects, styles, and mediums. The key is to stay true to your unique voice and experiences while using the framework as a guide to structure and shape your narrative.
